Day 6 - Heidelburg, Speyer, Strasbourg - Thursday, September 28, 2023
We
arrived at Mannheim at 7:00 and after breakfast got on the bus to Heidelburg.
Even though we were in Mannheim it is an industrial town and not as pretty as
Heidelburg so we only drove through it and didn't spend much time there. The
drive to Heidelburg was about 30 minutes and we arrived at Heidelburg Castle
which was impressive. This is on the hill overlooking the university town which
has 160,000 people and 40,000 students. We heard some of the history and
legends of the Castle and saw the wine barrel that holds 224,000 litres of
wine. Of course, in the day the water wasn't safe to drink. We saw the
Cathedral, the Roman Bridge and the Monkey. We did rub his fingers so we'll
return and rubbed the mirror for luck and health. We got back on the bus and went and
had lunch on the ship. Then it was up to the sundeck again. The weather has been amazing
almost 80 the last few days and waited until we arrived at Speyer. Speyer means
spire and there are many. The Cathedral built in 1027 is the largest Romanesque
church in Europe. We also saw Trinity Church, the Lutheran Church and the ruins
of a Jewish Synagogue. We had time to walk the town and we stopped for gelato
and later a beer in the biergarten right near the ship. Went to the port talk
and then to dinner. Getting ready for a busy day tomorrow in Strasbourg.
