Rhine River Cruise

 Day 5 - Koblenz - Wednesday, September 27, 2023

We arrived at Koblenz as we were eating breakfast at about 7 a.m. and our ship was actually docked on the Moselle River. Koblenz means confluence - the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle River. Where the 2 meet is called the German Corner. At 8:30 we took a walk through the 2000 year old village, but like Cologne it was hit hard in WWII and 87% of the city destroyed. It is a cute little town with a population of about 112,000 people. There is a university with 14,000 students. We saw the Church of the Lady built in the 1500s and the Eye Roller who also sticks out his tongue at you. We walked to the German Corner and saw the statue of William I built in 1897 and replaced with a new statue in 1993 to honor the unification of Germany. We didn't have as much time as we would have liked and we returned to the ship at noon and sailed again at 12:15. After lunch we went on the sundeck to watch the most beautiful stretch of the Rhine. We passed numerous castles - Rhinefeldt, Mouse and Cat along with the Lorelei and quaint villages along the way. They brought us Jagermeister Schnapps to toast and had teatime in the lounge with an artistic and delicious spread of pastries. At 5:00 I went to the port talk and listened to the zither player for a couple of songs. Dinner was early at 6:00 and then we docked at Rudesheim. We had a little time to go into the town full of taverns, wine shops and a few souvenir store. At 9:45 we set sail for Mannheim.
