Tripn to Santa Fe

Day 33  Friday, March 3, 2023

Hi ho hi ho it's off to Chimayo we go. Only about 40 minutes away from Santa Fe it was a nice ride with beautiful vistas. On the way we tried to stop at Nambe Falls but it was gated shut. Many of the Indian tribes have restricted access to their lands since Covid. Our main destination though was the Santuario de Chimayo. This church was built in 1810. The story is that men found a cross illuminated in the dirt and removed it only to find it back in the same spot the next day. This continued until they concluded that this was holy dirt and a church needed to be built here. People make a pilgrimage here asking for healing and miracles. There are statues all around the church. There is a spot where you can also get some of the holy dirt. I have no pictures from inside as they were not allowed. We walked around the town and went into a few gift shops and a Cafe. Then we went into Santo Nino de Atocha built in 1857. Again no pictures allowed but I think this was my favorite church of all we've seen. It's interior was very simplistic with the art looking like it was done by local craftsman. The praying chapel had the ceiling covered with baby shoes. Then we stopped at two weaving shops. At Trujillos the man was a 7th generation weaver and we got to see his sister do some weaving. There was a small, 3 room, Museum that had glimpses into the history of the area. Hungry after all that we stopped at Rancho de Chimayo, a restaurant that had been recognized by James Beard. It was Friday so Ron had the trout almondine and I had shrimp enchiladas Ron also had a margarita and I had a Chimayo cocktail. An easy ride home and another wonderful day in New Mexico.

Trip to Santa Fe

Day 32  Thursday, March 2, 2023

Our list of things to do is getting short so we laid low today. It did snow and hail a little but it didn't stick. I cleaned up the Casita and we made a trip to Ross' to buy some planting pots so Ron can repot some of Chris' plants when we get there.  Sprouts was next door so picked up a few groceries. Ron took a walk down the road while I caught up on the blog. That's all for today.

Trip to Santa Fe

Day 31  Wednesday, March 1, 2023

Up early at 5:45 so that we could catch the 7:13 Road Runner to Albuquerque. It's about a 90 minute trip and on Wednesdays it's free for people 60+. It's actually really cheap on any day as the fare is only a few dollars.  We got to the Alvarado Transportation Center and then found the 66 bus to Old Town. The bus was free also. We found Old Town and stopped for tea and cromuffins. From there we walked to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. It was a really good museum which takes you through New Mexico's natural history, from the formation of the universe to present day. I think through grands would have loved all the dinosaurs.. We walked by the Albuquerque Museum and enjoyed the sculptures outside the museum. Window shopping in the Old Town was fun and we had to stop at the local church, San Felipe de Neri. This church is the oldest in ABQ and the oldest adobe building in the city also having been built in 1706. Lunch was at the Old Town Cafe and we stopped at Downshift Brewery for a beer before getting back on the bus and train. We arrived back in Santa Fe at 7:30. Another fun day in New Mexico.
